Have you defined a target audience of the right readers?

One of the most common statements I hear during consultations is:

“I don’t care who reads my books.”

“I want anyone to read my books.”

Here’s the big secret… lean in for this one.

If you try to appeal to everyone, you will appeal to no one.

Trying to appeal to everyone and anyone will not net you followers that care about your books or have the potential to turn into loyal, buying fans.

If you have found yourself making those statements, it’s time to try a new approach: define your target audience.

Don’t worry - it’s much easier than it sounds.

Here are three critical questions to help you start defining your target audience TODAY:

1. What is my readership’s median age? Age is important. It helps you hone your content style to appeal to the young, the old, or the in-betweens. Not all content is going to appeal to all age groups. Don’t be afraid to narrow it down to a five-year range here. Ex: 20-25, 25-30, 30-35, etc.

2. What is my readership’s political leaning? There may be times when you’re posting that your own political leanings may be hinted, and you don’t want to have to worry about losing fans over something simple. Instead, develop an idea about what kinds of people read your books, and what they’re political backgrounds look like. Keep this in mind when you post - and post thoughtfully - and you have the opportunity to actually build a stronger bond with your fans.

3. What other books and authors are on my readership’s bookshelves?

Imagine the books your target audience loves. Does their collection range across the spectrum from educational texts to high-fantasy and sci-fi? Or does the majority consist of a specific genre, such as new adult, middle-grade, western, or modern romance? Understanding their existing preferences can help do highly targeted research.

Give these three questions careful thought and you will be well on your way to properly determining your target audience. Keeping a well-defined target audience in mind as you create, post, and tag your content will help you attract the right people who are more likely to buy your books! There are avid readers in your genre, waiting to read what you write. They just have to know about it, and it’s up to you to reach out to them with the right content and the right hashtags - targeted to find them specifically.

In fact, this common problem is one of the biggest reasons why I was inspired to create my Instagram for Authors course.

This is a self-study course that shows you step by step exactly how to create and grow a proper author’s Instagram account so that you can achieve the fan base, recognition, and book sales that you have worked so hard for.

I'm here to shorten the learning curve (and frustration!) for you by sharing tested and proven methods and techniques for building and growing an account that shares you and your work with the world.

Additionally, you’ll get the systems that keep you from spending all of your time on social media. In the students-only Facebook group, you’ll get weekly challenges to help you create the perfect content for your audience and never have to suffer through “Instagrammers-block.”
